Why video calls are awesome
In the following few paragraphs, I want to talk about why (WhatsApp) video calls are so great and why I want to call my friends and family more often now.
The important thing is that we stick together
A few weeks ago, a really good friend (kudos to Joshua) called me spontaneously via WhatsApp video call. I am still very impressed by how easy it was and how much more personal that felt compared to a normal audio-only call.
After my friend had called me, I had several other video calls in the past weeks. Whenever possible, I used the video call instead of the audio-only one and it was soooo much more pleasant and enjoyable. The conversations were more emotional, personal, funnier and all in all a real experience. And it is sooo freaking easy – just a press of a button.
I think for iPhone users this is nothing new (as you have FaceTime) and might sound quite silly, but I had not really been able to imagine that this can make such a difference. And what is more, it is so easy compared to other alternatives, as for instance Skype video call.
The family is the first essential cell of human society
Now, knowing that is so easy to have so meaningful conversations with family and friends, I strive to make use of it and call my family and friends more often. When spending time in San Diego – thousands of kilometers away from the place where I actually live – it comes clearer and clearer to me how much I love and appreciate my family and friends back home. Scarcity shows us what is really important in our lives.
I think no matter how busy you are and no matter how stressed you are, you can always make time – at least a few minutes – to reach out for your best and loved ones. In fact, if you and they have a smartphone and an internet connection there is no real excuse for not calling them on a regular basis. Of course, there might be sensible reasons why you do not want to cultivate and maintain a connection to someone, BUT time and effort cannot be a reason why a relationship is sacrificed or has to suffer.
In my case, I try to reach out to my parents at least once a week via a video call from now. And whenever possible I try to call my friends via video call. I want to make the most out of my time and instead of chatting messages back and forth, the time is better invested in a real conversation via (video) call.
So, after this learning, I do highly recommend you to use WhatsApp video call (, FaceTime or whatever app) more often when you want to have a great conversation with your loved and best ones.
I hope this pretty basic insight (or reminder) from me motivates you to use video calls more often and spend more time caring for your relationships – in case you have not already done it.
As always write to me when you have questions, remarks or feedback.
All the best to you and yours,
